A vasectomy is a safe, effective, and permanent procedure. Dr. Colin Linke performs office-based vasectomies with the option of Nitronox for comfort and easy recovery. Most patients resume normal activity within a few days.
A vasectomy works by blocking the tubes (vas deferens) that carry sperm. The procedure does not affect testosterone levels, erections, or orgasm. It is one of the most reliable forms of permanent birth control for men.
As opposed to a cut into the scrotum to perform the vasectomy, a special tool is used to make a very small puncture into the scrotum. This allows for much less pain, and no large incisions that need to be healed. The puncture is about the size of an eraser-head, and will heal over in about 3-5 days.
For men who prefer added comfort during the procedure, Nitronox is available. This is a safe mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (“laughing gas”) inhaled through a mouthpiece during the procedure.
Patients may choose Nitronox for additional comfort during their vasectomy.
Vasectomy is typically covered by most insurance plans. Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your deductible and copay.

Before your vasectomy, Dr. Linke will review your medical history, answer questions, and explain the procedure. Patients should avoid blood thinners beforehand unless approved by their prescribing physician. It is also asked that you shave the scrotum 1-2 days prior to the procedure.
Most men experience mild soreness for 1–3 days, which is easily managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication. Wearing supportive underwear helps reduce discomfort.
